Regional Coca-Cola bottler drives manufacturing efficiencies using Edge2Web and AWS

Customer Profile

Customer is a leading producer and distributor of beverage brands owned by The Coca-Cola Company, as well as snack products from other leading brands. With 46 production centers, Customer is among the largest Coca-Cola bottling companies in Latin America and one of the most profitable in the world. Through its Coca-Cola franchise, the company serves a market of more than 125 million consumers in northern and western Mexico, as well as Ecuador, Peru, northern Argentina and the southwestern United States.

The Challenge

Before beginning their digital transformation journey, the Customer relied on their SAP ERP system to generate monthly asset performance reports. Asset management processes used performance KPIs generated by the ERP system, causing the organization to take a reactive approach to day-to-day incidents. Additionally, available KPIs were difficult for stakeholders to access and interpret due to a lack of context and minimal knowledge regarding operational business rules. Customer’s operational technology (OT) leaders embarked on a digital factory strategy with the following goals:

  • Optimize operations and achieve paperless manufacturing
  • Ensure efficiency and alignment between enterprise planning and production execution
  • Enable real-time asset performance monitoring and analytics visibility
  • Harness power of data coming off shop floor for continuous improvement
  • Compute and track cost-per-product by case, lines and plants

Edge2Web Solution

After an extensive vendor evaluation and POC cycle, Customer chose Edge2Web Low-code Tools – Director and Flow Server – as the foundation for their new digital factory strategy. Customer also contracted with a leading OTSI partner to develop the required frontend and back-end solution components using Edge2Web tools, and integrate the new MES application with existing ERP and MOM systems.

With architectural and technical best practice support from Edge2Web, Customer’s OTSI was able to rapidly implement the new MES on AWS using Siemens’ Insights Hub IoT and numerous AWS services including:

The Customer’s new digital manufacturing application, built using Edge2Web Low-code Tools, allows factory teams to monitor, control, and manage all the activities, resources, and in-progress work across their enterprise production operations. The new application allows operations teams to monitor the usage and performance of Customer’s assets within and across their sites. Integration with SAP provides comprehensive cost analytics, including deep insights about which operational units are running most efficiently, and why. As a result, plant managers, supervisors, and operators optimize resource utilization, minimize the costs of energy and materials, and prevent bottlenecks and quality issues during production.
