Founders Brewing Company is the US Subsidiary of Mahou San Miguel, a global beer brewing and distribution brand. Specializing in brews that are complex, aromatic, and flavorful, Founders ranks among the top 10 largest craft breweries in the U.S. Driven by an aggressive international expansion strategy, Founders needed to significantly improve operational agility, repeatability, and scale.
The Challenge
To support its agile production goals, Founders developed a plan to digitize and transform its primary brewery and packaging operations. Founders’ goals were to improve equipment availability, reduce packaging defects and rework, and optimize production performance. Founders’ digital manufacturing project included automating the computation of performance KPIs such as OEE, MTBF/MTTR, and trend/predictive analytics, including near real-time monitoring of critical production assets and processes. A key goal was to automate operational processes such as line changeovers and machine maintenance worklists by transforming paper-based processes into electronic work instructions. To achieve lean operations, Founders’ new digital infrastructure required integration with its existing Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Edge2Web Solution
Founders chose AWS IoT SiteWise for factory asset and timeseries data storage. Amazon S3 is used to store configuration data, and Amazon RDS holds structured data. For KPI configuration, computation, and visualization, Founders selected Edge2Web Factory Insights, a leading SaaS smart manufacturing solution that is integrated with the chosen Amazon platform services. Founders uses Edge2Web Flow Server for asset and process monitoring, and to exchange data with CMMS and other plant applications. Edge2Web Director is used to implement electronic work instructions and custom analytics/visualizations.
