Nedschroef Machinery adds digital services using Edge2Web and AWS

Nedschroef Machinery provides metal parts manufacturers worldwide with premium fabrication machines and tools. Nedschroef’s fabrication machines serve a wide variety of metal forming applications and are continuously adapted for new alloys, coatings, and composite materials. Since its inception in the 19th century, Nedschroef’s academic and field engineering leadership has contributed significant innovations to metallurgy, materials science, and metals fabrication processes.

To further improve machine reliability, performance, and value, Nedschroef’s product leaders chose to create and package a suite of digital applications with their physical products. Specification of the new digital data logging service (DDL) included several critical requirements:
- Cloud data management – machine operating data would need to be ingested and stored securely in the cloud
- Provisioning – the new cloud application would need to connect securely
- Analytics and visualization – the DDL application would need to dynamically compute and display a wide range of machine operating states and KPIs
- Flexible access – the DDL application would need to deliver machine insights to authorized users worldwide on desktop, tablet, and phone devices
Edge2Web Solution
After conducting a detailed POC, Nedschroef chose Edge2Web Director, a leading low-code industrial IoT app builder solution, for DDL application services. In addition to providing the power and speed Nedschroef required, Director’s pre-built Application Accelerators were used to quickly add polished, product-grade functionality to DDL.
Using Edge2Web Director, Nedschroef’s software engineers implemented a rules-based application architecture that allows DDL to be easily configured for a variety of new machines. Importantly, the architecture also enables DDL to operate with previously commissioned machines after they have been field-upgraded with appropriate sensor kits.
Key DDL features include:
- Secure, multi-tenant cloud data storage
- Intuitive user interface and navigation
- Informative, contextualized visualizations
- Summary of overall machine health, including metrics for cooling, feeding, filters, hydraulics, and lubrication
- OEE and related performance KPIs
- Power/air consumption KPIs
- Tracking of all relevant machine alarm conditions
With architectural and technical best practice support from Edge2Web, Nedschroef was able to rapidly implement the DDL application on AWS using Siemens’ Insights Hub and numerous back-end AWS services.
